Every time I start to truly lose all faith in humanity (and living in Los Angeles, it is VERY easy to believe that everyone has turned into greedy, selfish, narcissistic SOBs) something small but wonderful always happens to remind me that there are decent people left in this world. Yesterday I saw the most moving example...
I was watching Jeopardy last night - it was a repeat as all Saturday shows are. I love this show because with all of the drivel on television nowadays, this is one of the few intelligent shows that has survived amidst the sea of stupidity. Plus it's a total ego boost to get the questions right before the contestants do. :)
So, we get down to Final Jeopardy and the category is 1930's Women. Now the reigning champion, Scott, has $13,400 while the other two contestants, Jamey and Anders, each have $8000. And here's what happened...
I couldn't believe it. I had to rewind to make sure I saw it right. This guy who knew that his other competitors would go all in bet just enough to TIE?? He easily could have bet the extra $1 like so many people do to make sure he was the only winner. But instead he made this amazing gesture and let the other two be Champions for the day as well.
I didn't get to see the rematch until I found the clip on YouTube (so I didn't know about the conversation during the commercial), but I still think what Scott did was remarkable. I don't think it matters why he did it... just that he did.
And to answer the question of did he do the right thing - YES HE DID! Sure, he lost the next game, but he got the final question wrong. He might have lost even against new opponents if one of them was correct and he wasn't. And this way the generosity that he showed can serve as an inspiration to those of us who might need it.
Way to go Scott Weiss!! I sincerely hope this comes back to you three fold and you have great karma for a long time. Thank you for reminding me that there are people who do not solely think of themselves.
Meow!
